Yesterday we told you all about my homework room redo with Home Decorators and Design Improvised. If you checked out Haeley’s post, you saw her design board and the inspiration for the room. I started out by painting the room. If you do nothing else, painting can make a hug difference in the feel of a room.
We bought the big pieces of furniture from Home Decorators, and they anchor the room. From there we basically had to accessorize. I had been collecting the artwork over the piano with the room in mind, but the giant brain picture over the desk was a Round Top purchase from last year. It had been hanging in my boys’ room, but it’s much more fitting in the homework room. Watching Haeley put together the gallery wall above the piano was impressive. I’m always in awe of people who just have a vision of how things should look. She’s pretty much a genius with the finishing touches.
The small table in front of the window was upstairs in the play room, but by bringing it downstairs we keep all the kids (and their art supplies) in the same room. I had been eyeing the blue Ikea cart forever, and this room seemed like the perfect reason to buy it! The idea is to keep arts and crafts things easily accessible.
We have two of the six door shelves. The one between the two desks holds books and supplies the kids might need when doing their homework. The other cabinet holds the board games and the computer tower that my husband built. Here is something that helped me out with this project: I bought the furniture in stages. That allowed me to put it together without getting too overwhelmed, and it also let me spread out my spending. There’s no rule that says that you have to buy every element of a room all at once!
The shelf above the desk was a Home Goods impulse purchase, but I love it! Right now it’s holding precious toys that my kids don’t want destroyed by younger fingers, but Candice gave me an amazing idea for using the shelf for an Advent at Christmas (it has 25 cubbies).
I’m so excited about how this room turned out. I feel like it was the perfect solution to our homework problem. I’m listing the info for the items that I bought at the bottom.
