This year I really wanted to add a little nature to my spring decor but keep the vintage sparkle I have so much of so I made these glittered birds in vintage inspired blues and greens to add around the house. They are simple to make and only cost a few dollars! That is my kind of project!
- Glue: I used Martha Stewart Crafts Glitter Glue
, but Modge Podge will work as well if you have it on hand.
- A brush: I used a foam brush for the bigger areas and a smaller paint brush for the areas on the face around the eyes.
- Fine Glitter: I choose Martha Stewart Glitter for this simply because I think she has the best color options. But the important part is using a fine glitter for this project so that you can still keep the detail of the feathers.
- Birds: I bought the birds from Hobby Lobby. They carry them in the floral section and its just a few dollars for a pack of 2 or 4 depending on the bird. I find it is easiest to glitter the white birds so you don’t have to cover up any strong colors.
The steps were so simple I didn’t even photograph them. All you need to do is cover the bird in the glue and then sprinkle the glitter over it. Next tap off the bird and add more glue and glitter to anywhere you may have missed. In this case the bodies of the birds were foam and a more structured feather and the tails were fluffy feathers. I chose to just cover the body and stronger feathers and leave the fluffy tails. Regular feathers are actually really great at holding the glue and glitter so you don’t need to worry about them getting ruined. The fluffy feathers won’t so watch out for that.
The nice thing about the birds is that they come wired to the packaging so keep the wires on! You can push them into a floral foam block so you can paint and glitter the whole bird without covering your hands in glitter and glue too! Plus its a great way to let them dry. And you can use the wire later to hold them in place in your displays.
That is it! Let them dry and add them to your spring displays for that extra bit of sparkle. We will show you a project that we used them in tomorrow! You are going to love it!
These are so beautiful and I love them placed on the branch!
