Thanks to Minted for working with us this post.
It’s November 2nd. The costumes and pumpkins are all put away, and we’re all officially recovering from the Halloween sugar hangover! Obviously the next thing to start thinking about is Christmas! I think it’s still a little early to start holiday baking, but it’s just about time to start planning your holiday cards.
We’re working with Minted again this year for our family Christmas cards. There are so many things that I love about using Minted, not the least of which is their seemingly unlimited options for every taste, color scheme and schedule (for those who might prefer a New Year’s card!). One of my favorite tips, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, is to search by designer. I noticed last year that I used the same designer for a holiday card and a baby announcement. If you like a designer, chances are they have more than one option for you.
We’ve seen such an evolution in holiday and Christmas cards over the last 5 years – from just a photo card to fully customizable, beautifully printed cards with all kinds of amazing techniques (like foil and glitter!). Here are three favorite trends for 2016:
- Hand Lettered: The hand lettering movement is everywhere now. It add a beautiful handmade artistic touch to your cards. Many designs are fully handlettered, some are a little more subtle and we love the full-card designs that include hand drawn elements, too. Choose a design that includes something special – like metallic foiling if you want to take it up a notch.
- Watercolor: This is another handmade touch that gives a beautiful one of a kind look. You can do this in traditional holiday colors, or do something a little more unique.
- Simple & Chic: This is a more minimalist look. A lot of times Christmas can be over the top. This style will give your eyes a bit of a rest and will definitely help your card stand out on your recipients photo wall! A minimalist look let’s your photo be the star of the show.

When you’re ordering from Minted, don’t forget to take advantage of their special extra touches like recipient addressing and back of card details (this is where I like to put candids of the kids, or newsletter/year-in-review type info). There are also amazing envelope liners and stickers. This year you can even match your postage stamp to your card theme!!
Check back in a couple of weeks when we share our holiday cards and some ideas for using art with Minted.
