If I haven’t professed my love of hand lettering and text art lately, let me take a moment to tell you how much I LOVE it. I have aspirations of being an artful hand letterer – and just like any art, there is a bit of science behind those beautiful swashes, clean lines, and developing a signature style. I’d venture to say that I have pretty handwriting but I am by no means a modern calligrapher and will take all the help I can get!
In her new book, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF CHALK LETTERING: Create and Develop Your Own Style, Valerie McKeehan holds your hand and through exercises, simple but clear explanations and tips and tricks that will help take your chalk art to the next level – which for me was simply writing on a chalkboard to creating a piece of “art” for my daughter’s playroom. (I was sent a complimentary copy of the book as part of it’s “Blog Tour” – more on that later!)
Valerie’s lessons and exercises are easy to understand and well explained – but my favorite part of her book are the “tricks of the trade” – those touches that make all the difference. Did you know you can sharpen chalk? With a pencil sharpener? And instead of completely erasing a letter, try using a cotton swab to touch up or erase the part that needs to be redone.
When I moved the studio out of the house, Vivi moved into the space and we’re both loving the dedicated play space. I transformed a piece of inexpensive art from the thrift store with chalkboard paint (painted several coats over the frame and glass!) to create a big “canvas” for the piece I wanted to try. Taking a line from my favorite designer (with a little twist), I lettered “She is quick and curious and courageous and kind” for the informal gallery wall that has popped up.
I don’t think I’ll be selling my pieces any time soon – but this is hands down, one of the best hand-lettered, not traced, all on my own, pieces of chalk art I’ve completed. I can’t wait to practice more and try again.
We’re giving away one copy of THE COMPLETE BOOK OF CHALK LETTERING: Create and Develop Your Own Style by Valerie McKeehan! All you have to do is leave a comment – let us know what you’re up to for the holidays, your favorite cookie, what quote or phrase you’d letter on a piece of wall art, just say “hi” – whatever!
