I’m so loving this “reverse stencil” technique – because it’s nearly impossible to mess up and Vivi can go to TOWN with the paint! We are lacking in 4th of July outfits this year so I decided to make a dress that she could wear for the Fourth but that would be good for the rest of the summer, too! This method would work just as well on a tee or tank.
- fabric paint
- vinyl OR stickers
- a tee/tank/ or tshirt dress
Line the dress with something nonabsorbent. I used foil. Cut and place the reverse stencils. I added three funky stars to the skirt of this dress, in hopes Vivi would cover a really big section! I cut these with my Silhouette, but you could trace a design on the vinyl or use precut stickers in letters or shapes.
Dab the fabric paint onto the material using (mostly) an up and down motion. Use your finger, a pencil eraser, or a sponge. I let Vivi go after it with “ONE FINGER!!!!!”.
When the images are sufficiently covered (or the artist gets bored) gently remove the stickers and discard.
The results are super cute and Vivi is excited to wear a dress she “made”. I’m on the hunt for cute red flip flops now…
This would work just as well with a different color of paint or on a different colored shirt!
