I love mixing patterns in my home decor and design so its no surprise that I love to do that when I’m scrapbooking too. But I know mixing patterns can be a little tricky so today I wanted to share 3 of my favorite pattern mixing tips! And it was perfect timing for this post because we received a Messy Box in the mail along with a beautiful black and white striped album and page protectors.
(We love getting good mail and pretty much anything paper crafting, so the messy box from a Beautiful Mess is perfect for us. Disclaimer: The girls at A Beautiful Mess are dear friends and Candice even teaches a class with them! So they sent this box, but even so we really love the versatility of their new monthly kits. )
1. Stick with a monochromatic color scheme when you are learning to mix patterns. Taking out one design element can really help you simplify the process of choosing what works together. By removing the choices that come with mixing colors you can really see how the patterns are playing off each other.
As you can see there were plenty of black and white options in the messy box this month!
2. If you are feeling overwhelmed with mixing color and pattern choose one main pattern that has all of the colors you want to use! Then mix other patterns in with only one or two of the colors.
3. The most important thing is to mix scale. So if you are picking three patterns choose a large, medium, and small pattern to mix.
I made this page in just a few minutes using only items in the kit and I printed the images instagram and just cut them to fit the 3×4 size.
4. Okay, okay I know I said three but bonus! I’m adding one more. The use of neutral space can really help when you are using multiple patterns. Here by adding the white boarder on the instagram’s we give the eye some space to rest and even though they are black and white your eye will look at the images first because of the white space in a sea of patterns!
I hope these few tips help you in your future pattern mixing! Thanks again to Elsie and Emma for letting us make messes this month!
