We started talking about the possibility for this room last year when we started Handmade Mood. I had a dilemma at my house: I have 4 kids in elementary school plus two young kids who haven’t started school yet. What that means for me is a lot of crayons and homework time after school.
The routine at my house used to be that kids would come home from school and congregate at the kitchen table to do their work. The problem was that it left a trail of homework mess from the front door all the way to the kitchen. The other problem was that if the homework didn’t get done before dinner then we’d have to clear the table and find a place for all the school mess.
Our house had a formal dining room that was being used for computers and piano practice. We hadn’t actually eaten a family meal in the dining room for a couple of years, but it wasn’t really set up to do anything else.
We came up with the idea of turning the dining room into the homework room. I wanted to keep my kids where I could hear them, so the open dining room seemed like the perfect solution.
This is when we called Haeley from Design Improvised. Haeley not only has a wonderful blog, she also runs a design consultation business where she offers room designs. I talked with Haeley about the concerns I had and what I wanted to accomplish. I think one of the biggest struggles was between my vision and my husband’s vision! Haeley came up with an amazing design that we used for the inspiration for the room. You can read more about how she helped and her process here.
Haeley’s design included furniture from Home Decorators Collection, and when we contacted them, they were excited by the idea of turning a room that a lot of people don’t use, into a room that they use every day.
One of the key things for me was having a place to put all my kids stuff where they could get to it easily, but also where it wouldn’t all be out in the open. I also wanted the room to look like it had custom built ins. Haeley found the Oxford 6 Door Storage Cabinet and the Oxford Computer Desk. I bought two desks and two cabinets which gives us more than enough storage and a lot of work room.
If you’re going to buy from Home Decorators, you should definitely sign up for their mailing list. They’re always running great promotions! You should also be prepared to spend some time on the assembly of the furniture. I will say though, that the customer service is amazing. I had a couple of questions, and the help desk was amazing.
Tomorrow we’ll show how the room all came together and some of the other sources used. It’s amazing the difference that can be made when Haeley puts the final touches on a room!
