Last week I was mixing up a batch of brown sugar scrub and I was craving all things fall, winter, cozy and warm and I found myself using a mixture of essential oils that captured those feelings perfectly.
Cinnamon Leaf, Cedarwood, Nutmeg and Vanilla essential oils basically smell like Mrs. Clause’s kitchen right around December 20th. So, naturally, I wanted to make MY kitchen smell like that!
I really love our homemade kitchen counter cleaner but my husband does NOT love the vinegar smell. Even though I can’t smell it, he smells it HOURS later. I appreciate the cleaning power of vinegar though – so I made a counter spray that might be superfluous but makes my home peaceful :).
In a glass spray bottle (this one is from Rail29 and I LOVE it!) I combined 2 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol and filled the rest of the container with water. Then I added about 25 drops total of the essential oils using my nose to tell me when enough was enough. I like to use this for crumb cleanups (basically anytime I’d reach for a wet sponge or wet a paper/kitchen towel to wipe the counter) and after cleaning with a vinegar-based cleaner.
It also makes a fabulous room spray – just be sure to give the bottle a good shake before each use and use caution around floors that might become slick.
Some common sense – I’m not a chemist, but the alcohol helps it dry faster. It doesn’t affect my counter tops but I can’t predict what it could do to other materials. Don’t make crazy concoctions without doing your research and please keep away from faces, children, and pets!
