Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays! Growing up we had a huge neighborhood party and parade. A tradition that morphed into a long week at the beach with family sitting under fire works with a picnic watching the ferry boats pass back and forth. Fourth of July lends itself to fun traditions, family and community parties outside. With our friend Haeley and her 2 girls plus our brood of 10 we knew a backyard picnic and pool party was just what we needed this summer!
This summer we were delighted to host a backyard picnic and pool party with our friend Haeley from Design Improvised featuring Minted’s Patriot Party Collection. Keeping things beautiful but simple to execute was key! We set up two areas throughout the backyard to facilitate the picnic. First, was the food table, anchored by the amazing freehand USA map painted by Candice. When we added the custom banner and red fans it made a high impact focal point for the food and drinks.
We kept the menu pared down to reduce prep time: Sarah’s perfect pasta salad, hot dogs, berries with cream and yummy cake.
As much as I love designing and printing my own banners, the simplicity of a custom open-and-assemble banner is hard to beat!
We had a mix of kiddos (from a year old to 13) and adults, and we knew that there wouldn’t be a set “eating” time – so the food was set out in intervals and easy to serve yourself we had it already portioned.
Haeley transformed some table confetti into a fireworks cake topper by cutting the dots into perfect bursts and attaching them to bamboo skewers.
How perfect are these Wine glass tags as cute and practical drink “toppers” that helped keep the bugs out and helped identify each drink?! We love finding extra uses for things!
Not wanting them to feel left out, the forks were embellished with flag stickers!
The plain white plates were dressed up with a sticker from the collection, too!
Every party should end with a sweet treat to take home (to secretly eat while the rest of the family is napping!) and even the kraft favor boxes got patriotic with a red, white and blue sticker.
Locally sourced salt water taffy was right at home!
You know it’s not a Handmade Mood party without a crown and despite what the photographic evidence suggests these paper crowns were a huge hit – even with the “big” kids!
The second area we set up was set away from the food and pool for picnicking and lounging in the shade. Haeley stenciled this adorable star spangled drop cloth to anchor the picnic area.
Between the tress hung paper lanterns embellished with kraft stars and a circle garland from the Patriot collection.
The addition of star garland made it a magical spot to celebrate and eat lunch!
Not only did our littles like having a spot to sit and eat – but setting it away from the hub-bub of the pool made it a perfect place to relax and just stare up into the trees!
To pump up the party in the pool, we floated a handful of red and blue balloons. All of our swimmers were old enough to understand how fragile the baloons were and that their party-crazy mommas liked how they looked – if you have younger swimmers please exercise caution!
These guys were just excited to be swimming!
After lunch and “star gazing” in the trees we were ready for popsicles! These adorable red, white, and blue star shaped popsicles are from Dairy Queen! We’ve seen several similar frozen treats at the grocery store, too.
If you are a slower popsicle eater (or know a two year old) the wine glass tags did triple duty as a drip guard to keep hands clean and avoid a sticky mess on clothes.
Pop over to Haeley’s blog to see how she made the stenciled drop cloth and those amazing star paper lanterns!
