About a week ago I got a booger of a black eye. The whole nine yards – swollen shut, black and blue, top and bottom – it was a doozy. I wish I had a great story to go along with it – but I was just opening a bottle and the cork got stuck. So lame, right? I share this because I’m so SO super glad we took our family portraits for Christmas cards early this year.
Is that vain and superficial? Maybe. But Christmas cards are hands down my favorite holiday tradition. Keep your Elf on a Shelf, I’d rather stay home than go to the company party, I’m cool without a cookie exchange – but opening my mailbox everyday for a month and seeing all those fabulous envelopes with my friends and family’s sweet faces? Yes, please! Needless to say, choosing a card is a Big Deal in this house and I’m embarrassed to admit how many hours I spent perusing the Minted site, looking at their beautiful cards, trying to choose this year’s winner.
What does one DO with all of those beautiful cards friends and family send? I’ve strung them, and clipped them to twine and taped them to walls in the past – but this year, inspired by our giant, light, inexpensive pin board, I made a smaller (but still big enough for all those cards) version.
Instead of the huge piece of insulation, I snagged a 6-pack of 14 ½ x 48 in polystyrene panels at Home Depot (a quick check of a few other sites shows it’s a common product!).
Using some scrap cardboard splints for reinforcement, I taped two sheets together and “upholstered” it just like we did the giant version. Then, just add a trim of push pins for a custom, nailhead trim look! The letters on top were cut with my Silhouette on red glittered card stock in the font “Ondise”.
I love the faux bois fabric – it’s totally going to influence all the rest of my Christmas decorating – and that I have a spot of honor to display all the mail box love we get this year.
