Father’s Day requires a manly snack, and I can’t think of a snack that’s more manly than beef jerky! I’m not actually a huge fan of jerk, something about dried meat creeps me out a little bit, but my husband and kids love it. When I was brainstorming what would be an easy treat for dad that kids could help with, trail mix was the first thing that came to my mind. Then I had a lightbulb moment, what if I combined the manly jerky with the easy trail mix? That’s right people, we have trail mix with jerky (Shawna, this is a perfect treat for a dad who works out of his truck!!). When I asked everyone what they thought of the manly trail mix, I got a lot of strange and skeptical looks, but I’m here to tell you, everyone who tried it loved it!
I think the trick with this concoction is keeping a similar palate. I went with a bbq flavor, so we used:
- BBQ Almonds
- BBQ Pork Jerky
- Dried Cherries
- Mini M& M’s
- Salted Sunflower Seeds
The great thing about this snack is that the kids can help make it. Just set out some bowls and fill them with the components that the dad in your life will enjoy. Then, have the kids scoop the mix ins into a cellophane bag. We used a self sealing bag and placed the whole thing in a cute (but manly … once you remove the bow), gift tube.
The only caveat is that this doesn’t have a super long shelf life, because the nuts and the jerky will go stale. It will still sustain life if you’re stranded on a desert island, but the flavor will be at its peak within the first few days.
