Happy 4th of July! If you’re checking in today, and you’re looking for a last minute festive something, we have the perfect thing. The red, white and blue refresher could just as easily be called kids best friend for all the sugar it contains! I’m not going to pretend that this is an adult friendly drink. In fact, I’m pretty sure this is for kids 12 and under!
The key to layering a drink like this is sugar content. The trick is finding a blue beverage that has more sugar than the other two drinks. This is where the sweet factor comes in. In the bottom of the glass we used blue soda from the soda aisle (think Jones or something similar; you can also use Hawaiian Punch). For the middle we used Coco Lopez. The top was club soda flavored with a bit of grenadine. You can also use Kool-Aid, because it actually has less sugar than the blue drinks! We topped the drink with whipped cream, because at this point we’re just seeing how high a number we can get on the glucose meter!
We tested this out on a group of very discerning youngsters, and the general consensus was, “yum,” followed by a neverending sugar dance! Make sure you fill the glass with ice, and then layer 2 0z blue, 1 oz coconut and 2 oz red. Top with whipped cream and a straw, and hand over to the nearest child!
There you have it, sugar high and science lesson all in one! We hope you’re enjoying your holiday, wherever you are!
